Navigating Child Visitation During Coronavirus

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has catapulted the world into uncharted territories; the Center for Disease control has advised us to limit contact with others and to practice social distancing. To help stop the spread of Coronavirus, Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam issued a Stay at Home Order on March 30, 2020. The Order requires residents of Virginia to stay inside of their residences unless they are leaving their homes for one of the specified exceptions. With these new guidelines in place, many parents and caretakers are wondering how the pandemic and the Governor’s stay at home order effects child visitation.

Although the state is under order to “stay at home”, a parent can travel to drop off a child or pick a child up to facilitate child custody, visitation, or childcare. If you have a court order that allows a parent visitation, you must abide by the order. If you have concerns about you or your child’s health, communicate with the order parent and see if you can come up with a solution that works for both of you. During this time parents are urged to comply with the CDC’s guidelines in order to help stop the spread – ensure your children are washing their hands, wipe down surfaces and other objects that are frequently touched, and maintain social distancing.

Each visitation situation is different. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s visitation schedule and how it is impacted by Coronavirus, contact us at 757-498-1800 and let us at Hadley Law help you.
