Coronavirus and Estate Planning

Coronavirus and Estate Planning

The news about COVID-19, also known as Coronavirus, has likely changed how you go about your daily life. Every day we hear more and more about this virus and how it is bringing this world into uncharted territory. Many are wondering what they should do to prepare themselves for this new world we are in.

One of the most important things you can do is ensure that you have a current, valid estate planning package available. This includes a Last Will and Testament, a Power of Attorney, and an Advanced Medical Directive. While it is not fun to think of your mortality, it is important to make sure you have these documents so that if something does happen to you, your affairs are handled according to your will, lessening the stress on your loved ones.

·         Last Will and Testament – document that states who gets your assets upon your death.

·         Advanced Medical Directive – document that allows a specified person to make medical decisions upon your incapacity.

·         Power of Attorney – document that allows a specified person to act on your behalf in private affairs, business affairs, or some other legal matter.

If you already have these documents, this is a good time to review them and make sure no changes need to be made. Have you divorced? Have you had any children since the time of drafting your will that need to be added? Have you decided that you now want to be an organ donor? Do you want someone else to be your power of attorney?

Here at Hadley Law we are well versed in drafting estate planning documents and are here to help. Reach out to us at 757-498-1800 to schedule and consultation and let’s discuss how we can help you.
